Nevada is a leader in the field of renewable energy. With our extensive geothermal resources, we are second only to California in the generation of electricity from geothermal energy. And thanks to our extensive desert lands and sunny climate, Nevada is considered one of the top four states in terms of untapped solar energy potential. In 2006, construction began on a 64-Megawatt Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plant in Boulder City. Nevada is also home to industry-leading companies in the area of lithium power and hydrogen fuel storage systems.
Nevada has been producing oil since the mid-1950s and currently has several actively producing fields. Recent discovery of huge oil reserves in Utah has renewed interest in exploration and drilling in Nevada, with oil speculators buying up leases to the Bureau of Land Management's extensive resources. The state expects to see continued growth in this area for several years as the U.S. seeks to decrease its dependence on foreign oil.
